Before Mexico could become a nation, it had to imagine itself as one.

El Nacimiento de una Nación — The Birth of a Nation commemorates the Mexican War of Independence through one of the country's most enduring symbols: the Mexican eagle and serpent.

Rather than depicting a single battle or historical figure, this piece represents what ultimately emerged from eleven years of struggle — a Mexican nation with an identity of its own.

At the center, the eagle grips the serpent while standing upon the nopal cactus, an image rooted in the legendary founding of Tenochtitlan and eventually adopted as the defining emblem of Mexico. Behind the eagle, a weathered field of green, white, and red recalls the colors of Mexico while a golden sunburst suggests the arrival of a new era.

The intentionally aged appearance gives the artwork the character of an artifact that has survived generations. Distressed color, darkened copper tones and worn surfaces allow the piece to feel connected to history rather than simply illustrating it.

The dates 1810–1821 mark the long struggle from the beginning of the independence movement to the establishment of an independent Mexico.

The rebellion began with a cry. What emerged was a nation.

✦ CREATED ON REAL COPPER
The artwork is individually UV printed directly onto a genuine copper round. Rather than hiding the metal beneath the design, the artwork was created to work with it. Copper-colored borders, metallic details, weathered surfaces and deep shadows visually interact with the underlying copper to create the appearance of an aged commemorative medal.

Each piece is individually produced, and natural variations in the copper surface may make every finished round slightly different.
